Miss America was held for the first time in 1921 to attract tourists to Atlantic City. The winner was a 16-year old girl (Margaret Gorman) from Washington, third on the left. Click on the image to enlarge.

Today, Miss America contest is the largest provider of scholarship money to young women in the United States and in the world.
