Maybe this piece of information will seem trivial to you, but until today I did not know that Apple computers (at least laptops) can read out loud any text in English. Simply highlight the text you want to hear, do a right-click and select “speech” in the menu.

They’ve done this for years and years. The regular command is in the “Edit” menu. There’s also a script in the services submenu of all applications’ main menu that will add the selected text to iTunes as a spoken track.

As of the newest OS, OS X 10.7 Lion, Apple have added various voices for German, Arabic, Chinese, Danish, Australian/British/Irish/Scottish/South African English, Finnish, French, French-Canadian, Greek, Hindi, Indonesian, and a bunch of others I’m not gonna scroll through now.

In previous OS’, you had to install third-party voices for languages other than English.
