There is a website which tracks airplane crashes and ranks airline safety

August 31, 2011

There is a German website which tracks airplane accidents all over the world. They record such information as the date of the accident, country, number of fatalities, type of the plane and airline, among other data. Looking at JACDEC data, it appears that on average 4 planes crash every month globally, sometimes 6 and more.

Based on such data, they create annual ratings of airline safety. For 2011, top 10 safest airlines in the world are listed below. The rest (60) can be found here (in German language).

1 Qantas Airways
2 Finnair
3 Air New Zealand
4 TAP Portugal
5 Cathay Pacific Airways
6 All Nippon Airways
7 Air Berlin
8 Virgin Atlantic Airways
9 Emirates
10 Transaero Airlines

P.S. I am not sure I like the sign “New!” on the image.
