I just measured my English vocabulary and discovered my level sits way below the average native English speaker. This is not surprising as I am not a native speaker. However, according to the vocabulary bands below, my level is comparable to that of an average European person and is enough for confident communication and reading any literature.
How well do you know the language? Take the test and compare your knowledge with others!
Check your result against the vocabulary bands below:
400 – 500 words – active vocabulary for basic communication (minimal).
800 – 1000 words – active vocabulary for basic communication; or passive vocabulary for basic reading.
1500 – 2000 words – active vocabulary for daily communication; or passive vocabulary for confident reading.
3000 – 4000 words – vocabulary needed for reading newspapers and general literature.
Around 8000 words – vocabulary of an average European person, enough for confident communication. You don’t need to know more words for oral and written communication and to read any literature.
10 000 – 20 000 words – active vocabulary of an average European person (native language).
50 000 – 100 000 words – passive vocabulary of an average European person (native language).
