All drugs are legal in Portugal since 2001

November 5, 2010

In Portugal, all drugs are legal and decriminalized since 2001. Portugal was the first European country to introduce full drug decriminalization by abolishing all criminal penalties for personal possession of drugs, including marijuana, cocaine, heroin and methamphetamine. Instead of jail, a drug abuser faces a psychologist. Not bad, huh?

There was a lot of skepticism around this policy and it was a risky 9 year experiment. However, it paid off. Recent report shows a steep drop of deaths from overdoses and the rate of HIV cases. Europe, what’s your call?
